When I open a chat from someone's profile, minimise it and then navigate to a different page it disappears.

I have the same issue on mobile, chats close as soon as screen switches. 

Where did she come from....where did she goooo....where did she come from  Cotton ThreeToothJoe.

I have just discovered that this is only for someone that is on my enemy list. Are we not permitted to chat to enemies? Can't remember if I sent the chat before I added to enemy list or afterwards. Maybe intentional in that case.

That's correct. If somebody has added you to their Enemies list it also blocks communication directly.
